EMIGRE MAGAZINE

Rudy Vanderlands (Dutch founder, editor, designer) Zuzana Licko (Czech founder, typeface designer)
Original intention: Focus upon liminality - 'inbetween-ness:

  • Hard to pin-down style
  • Exploratory and Evolving Visual Language
  • Responsible for the formation of many networks (influential)
  • Transformative Graphic Language
  • Collaborative Approach
  • Critically Engaged
  • Technologically engaged

CRITICS

Massimo Vignelli : 'A national calamity' 'An abberation of culture'Massimo Vignelli (neo modernist): 'A national calamity' 'An abberation of culture'

Stephen Heller : 'A blip in the continuum' 'Cult of the ugly

David Carson: Designers who had once championed their work for its aggressiveness began to condemn it as too readily identifiable, and therefore unusable. Beach Culture magazine published an issue with a cover line that boasted "no Emigre fonts," although the logo itself was set in Licko's Senator. Ironically, it was designers like Carson who had popularised its style
